Exploring McIntyre Waste Pile: Thermal Drone Mission Reveals Hidden Heat

For our final project for our UAS II class at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, our group's pivotal McIntyre Waste Pile drone mission employed cutting-edge technology to investigate potential smoldering beneath the coal pile. Equipped with the advanced DJI Mavic 3 Thermal drone, our team embarked on a meticulously planned operation. As the drone soared above the McIntyre Waste Pile, its thermal imaging capabilities became our eyes from the sky. We meticulously navigated the drone across the expanse, capturing detailed thermal data that would unveil any hidden heat signatures below the surface. The Mavic 3 Thermal's high-resolution thermal camera was instrumental in detecting even subtle temperature variations, allowing us to pinpoint areas of concern. The data collected was not only fascinating but potentially critical for safety and environmental monitoring. By interpreting the thermal images, we aimed to identify anomalies indicative of smoldering or heat accumulation beneath the waste coal pile. This information could inform proactive measures to mitigate risks associated with environmental hazards. Throughout the mission, precision and accuracy were paramount. We meticulously covered the entire area, ensuring no section was overlooked. The drone's agile maneuverability and responsive controls enabled us to navigate the terrain and capture comprehensive thermal scans. Ultimately, the McIntyre Waste Pile drone mission was a testament to the power of modern technology in environmental monitoring and safety assessments. Through our efforts with the DJI Mavic 3 Thermal drone, we took a proactive step towards understanding potential risks and ensuring the well-being of our surroundings. This experience underscored the importance of innovative tools in advancing our environmental stewardship and risk management capabilities. Special thanks to Dr. John Benhart and the Geospatial faculty at IUP for guiding us through this drone mission.
